REQUIRED EQUIPMENT

Safety is our first priority at Greenwich Youth Lacrosse. Each season USA Lacrosse updates equipment rules and we need to ensure our players are properly outfitted.

Below we have assembled some helpful guidance based on USA Lacrosse’s most recent standards. For our younger players we modify some of the stick requirements. However, for all our polayers we are required to follow strict USA Lacrosse and CONNY guidelines.

Important changes for this season:

  • Effective January 1, 2022, all boys must have shoulder pads designed for lacrosse with chest protectors and meet NOCSAE standard ND200.

  • All chest protectors and shoulder pads must contain the NOCSAE logo and SEI certification mark on both the packaging and the product to be legal for play.

  • See below for more information!

If you have any specific questions please speak with your coach.

Girls House League

All GYL House League girls must wear the gear listed above for travel players.

Other notes/tips:

  • Goggles and mouthgards are optional for K-2 players since we use Swax balls (non rubber) at this level

  • Stick length:

    • USA Lacrosse rule: 35.5 inches to 43.25 inches (sticks must be this length if your child is also enrolled in Intro to Travel)

    • GYL modification for K-2nd graders: we recommend if 35.5 inches is too large, you cut down to the shaft to the arm size of the girl (see video for more information)

  • Pocket size:

    • Legal is when the ball remains above the wall when pressured is applied in a horizontal stick

    • GYL modification (especially for K-2): we recommend putting a small pocket in each girl's stick and progressively shortening it throughout the season; a pocket will allow the player to scoop, cradle, throw, catch, and shoot with more confidence

Boys Travel Field Players

This applies to all travel players in grades 3-8:

Other notes/tips:

  • Click on the USA Lacrosse Equipment Guide to see a high resolution version of the graphic above

  • Helmets (CONNY recommends NOCSAE-approved lacrosse helmets, but HECC-approved hockey helmets are allowed)

  • Shoulder pads | note: effective January 1, 2022 all shoulder pads must be designed for lacrosse and meet NOSCAE standard ND200. Click here for more details

  • Intro to Travel (grades 3-4) sticks

    • Length of the stick may be 37 to 42 inches with no exceptions

    • the goalkeepers stick may be 37 to 60 inches long

    • there are no long poles permitted at this level

  • Travel (grades 5-8) sticks

    • In Junior play only (grades 5 & 6) a long pole shall be 43 to 60 inches; a team may have a maximum of three players using long poles (not counting the goalkeeper) in the game at any time

    • In Junior play only (grades 5 & 6) a player who uses a stick shorter than 40 inches shall, if the stick is challenged, be required to remove it from play with no further penalty assessed

Boys Travel Goalies

  • Effective January 1, 2021 all goalie chest protectors must be designed for lacrosse and meet the NOCSAE standard ND200. Click here for more details

  • Shin guards and football pants (with or without pads) are optional; many coaches believe youth level goalkeepers benefit from wearing shin, knee, and thigh pads – such pads are authorized for youth play so long as they do not significantly increase the size of the limb protected (e.g. no ice hockey, field hockey, or box lacrosse goalie pads)

Boys House League

All GYL House League boys must wear the gear listed above for travel players.

Other notes/tips:

  • Stick length:

    • CONNY Lacrosse rule: 37 inches to 42 inches (all 3rd and 4th graders should be in this range; all Intro players must be in this range)

    • For K-2 graders, we recommend you start the shaft at 37” and cut down further, if need be

    • no sticks greater than 42" are permitted in House League (or Intro to Travel Lacrosse)

    • “Fiddle sticks” are toys - your child must use a regulation lacrosse stick otherwise it will be difficult to scoop and throw with a regulation size lacrosse ball

  • The pocket must be adjusted so that the top of the ball does not fall below the bottom edge of the head when the stick is held horizontally

Cold Weather Clothing

During the early season practices, it can get cold and sometimes rainy. If this happens, please have your child wear layers with outer and under layers of clothing. Some suggestions are: full-sleeve t-shirt, water resistant jacket, water resistant sweat pants, and thin gloves.
