Updated Information On House League

Dear GYL House League Families,

The time has come - we are on the fields this weekend!

It was great to see so many kids at Old Greenwich School last Saturday. We have 800 children registered in our House League program alone. That is not a typo. We have big numbers and it is going to be a fantastic year of learning.

Our incredible master coaches (Shawn Cavanaugh for girls, Keith Radcliffe for boys K-2, and Eugene Miller for boys 3-4) have well over 150 volunteer coaches working with your kids and they have two key goals in mind: to have fun and to develop lacrosse skills! We are grateful for all our volunteers and if you have an interest in coming out, let's us know! (Warning: you may get recruited anyways).

Below is a list of updates since our last communication. From here on in, you will get more information directly from your team coaches and fewer e-mails like this. But, if you ever have any questions, please reach out Sarah or Shawn (girls program) or Craig, Keith, or Eugene (boys program).

Jerseys/Rosters:
  • If you missed Jersey Day, do not fret - you can pick up your child's jersey when she or he attends their first Sunday session. Just come to the field and we will get it all sorted out! It is hard for us to do Jersey handouts on Friday with so many kids and limited time on the field.
  • We do not post House League rosters but you may have already received an e-mail from your coach that will include this information - but please remember that we reserve the right to make changes if we see unbalanced teams or need to solve any other issues that arise. If you did not get an e-mail, you should soon!
  • We do not take friend requests; teams were thoughtfully assembled by our master coaches - we strive to combine kids from schools all over Greenwich to forge new friendships and to get new experiences with different groups.

Weekly Schedule/Fields:
  • You will get a weekly e-mail from your coach but the schedule is also posted on the GYL home page (in the ticker) and in "House League Logistics" under the 2024 Season Info drop down menu.
  • Fields (and parking) at Greenwich High are a challenge - so please be patient if we have to move fields and please drive slowly in the parking lots.
  • Parents and siblings are not allowed on the turf - please help us here so we aren't spending all of our time asking you to go behind the fences (or on the grass adjacent to GHS Field #6).
Key Update for Kindergarten and 1st Grade Girls and Boys:
  • As we previously announced, the K and 1st grade groups will not attend the first two Friday Night Clinics.
  • The first session for this group is Sunday March 17; then they will go again on Sunday March 24, and from that point on they will go every Friday and Sunday.
  • Boys K & 1 are going to spend the first two weeks (2 sessions in total) without helmets and pads; from past experience, the equipment for our newest and youngest players may inhibit the fun and development, so we are going to keep them on the sidelines for a few weeks (note: our girls program does this for the entire season but we recognize it is harder for the boys to play games without regulation equipment).
  • We support this age group with Swax balls which are the same size and weight as a regulation lacrosse ball but are soft.
  • We encourage you to purchase a Swax ball to practice at home; please, do not take them off the field! These are very expensive training aids and we cannot supply them to our membership.
New GYL Team Store!
GYL has a brand new team store curated and managed by our friends at Too Sparrows. Check out all the sweatshirts, t-shirts, shorts, jackets, slides, and more!

Proper Equipment / New Mandatory Shoulder Pads

Please be sure your child is equipped with the proper equipment for the season. GYL's Required Equipment Page is a valuable resource. Your son needs shoulder pads designed for lacrosse that includes a chest protector that meets NOCSAE standard ND200. Your daughter's goggles need to meet the current ASTM standards.
